GRAND RIVER CHALLENGE – First Race of the Ontario SUP Series
PARIS, ON - HOSTED BY NORTHSHORE PADDLESURF

summer splash eventHi all, here’s some helpful hints (hopefully) for the upcoming inflatable only SUP race in Paris. Try to make it out if you can. It’ll be a blast.

1) Depending on water levels, there can be some very shallow, rocky sections on the race route. I highly recommend a shorter fin. 6” or under is preferable, otherwise you may catch a fin and then some air, Superman style. Also, bring a spare if you have it.

2) Get comfortable with moving forward on your board or going into a surf stance so you can throw weight onto your front foot. This will take weight off the rear and help the fin “pop” over obstacles and cruise through shallower sections.

3) Maybe think about leaving your $500 dollar paddle at home. The shallower sections can be rough on paddles and I’d hate to have anybody bust an expensive stick. Get ready to take shallower, higher cadence strokes in these sections.

4) Shoes or booties are essential. You will likely come off your board at one point or another and the riverbed can be like walking on greased bowling balls. The start will require some running out through shallow water. Otherwise remember this general safety note for moving water: Due to the possibility of foot entrapment, if water is over your knees don’t stand up in it.

5) A helmet is recommended and so is a full PFD. A full PFD will give you extra padding in case you take a fall. Think of this race as more akin to mountain bike racing than road racing. We’ll call it SUP-Cross. There are many underwater obstacles and a few swifts. It’s only Class 1 but you’ll have much more to worry about than just staying out of your fellow racers way.

6) If anyone is interested in doing a pre-run of the race section let me know. I’m available quite a bit next week and I’d be willing to run you down for the cost of an inflatable rental or if you have your own board you can just donate some beer to the post-race party.

7) As of now the after party will be held on my family farm, which is twenty minutes south of Paris. Free rustic camping will be available here for race participants. Pinehurst Lake Conservation Area is another local camping option.

9) This is a beautiful section or river and will be the first SUP race of its kind in the area. Enjoy yourself.

We’ll have boards to demo after the race at the take-out above Penman’s Dam.

STAND UP FOR CANCER - GRAND RIVER SUP EXPEDITION - One Stand Up Paddler, 215km!
ELORA TO LAKE ERIE - SOLO AND UNSUPPORTED

I’m going to attempt to Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) 215km of the Grand River (in a very short amount of time) in order to raise awareness and funds for the Camp Trillium Childhood Cancer Support Centre.  I’m going to try to complete the journey in less than three days and possibly in as little as 24 paddling hours.

Is it kinda crazy?  Very likely.  Is it for a great cause? Absolutely! Please do what you can to help me to raise money for this fantastic facility!

About Camp Trillium - Camp Trillium is an organization that provides recreational and camping experiences for children living with cancer and their families. Programs are provided at no financial cost to the families, all of our programs are funded through contributions through community events and fundraising.  Camp Trillium's goal is to make sure that every child has a chance to enjoy the fun and friendships of childhood; despite what health issues they are currently battling.
