Jonah has been a clown for Cirque Du Soleil in Las Vegas and performed his own show on Broadway and around the world. In between, he’s been a pyrotechnician, stuntman, rigger, theatre designer, rock and ice climbing instructor, river guide, and most recently a father. He’s climbed El Cap in Yosemite and paddled a SUP across Lake Erie. He grew up paddling in Norfolk County and recently returned to start up a family with his lovely and talented aerialist wife, Sabrina, and his daughter (circus artist in training), Rosie.

Tom's great friend Jonah had been telling him about SUP for well over a year before he finally got around to trying it for the first time last summer. It’s not that he didn’t want to try it. He did! He just wasn’t sure if he had the time to let another all encompassing adventure sport into his already super-busy life of leisure.

In Tom's own words, "The thing is that I am not the kind of person to dabble in anything I do. If I am in, I am all in! I knew that if Jonah was into SUP that 1) it was going to be a huge amount of fun and totally addictive and 2) it was going to cost me a bunch of my free time and probably quite a bit of money spent on new gear. That’s the other thing – I am a gear pig. I’ll be the first to admit to this affliction - I just love gear. The right gear combined with correct training and my world has opened up to some truly magical experiences that very few will ever see for themselves. For me it is these high-point experiences that make life so rewarding. My last adventure sports immersion in this was with SCUBA diving. I got my recreational diver card four years ago and within a year and a half I had over 200 dives under my weight belt and was doing mixed gas tech dives to well below 150’. That’s just how I roll!"

The really good news (or bad if you are a gear pig) is that you really don’t need much stuff to get going with SUP. A paddle and a board and you are off – the stand up part is free. Once you get that first experience just being there on the still water with a warm breeze blowing past you’ll be hooked just like Tom was. Once you master the basic skills there are just so many ways you can go with it. Surfing, white water, racing, expeditions and even yoga. All combined with being out on the water and spending time with your friends in a fantastic natural environment. What are you waiting for? Get out there and give it a try!
